10 Reader Favorite Pie Recipes
Today is Pi Day, named so because the numbers in the date (3/14) are the same as the mathematical equation of Pi: 3.14. And that, dear friends, is the last time we are going to talk math on Southern Plate!: )
In honor of Pi day, let’s make this a food holiday instead, because hijacking math holidays for food is what I’m all about!
Here are some of my favorite pies – and consider this a free pass to order a pizza pie for supper.

This is my Oreo loving son’s favorite, of course! I love that it keeps in the freezer so you don’t feel like you have to eat it all at once (not by yourself, of course – but if you want to I’m not here to judge).
Peaches (fresh or canned) baked up in a rich buttermilk custard and serve warm (or cold), this pie is old fashioned comfort.
I took my original apple pie recipe and tweaked it a bit to allow me to make two (or three, or four) at once and freeze them for fresh Apple Pie anytime! Of course, I don’t think you’ll get any complaints if you bake one up today!
Simple as can be to make, if you are looking for a kid pleasing pie that they can make themselves, look no further.
From my latest book, Sweetness, this Orange Meringue Pie is a kissing cousin to Lemon Meringue – and stunningly delicious!
This is a recipe I developed to take the place of that wonderful apple dessert pizza many pizza places serve. Â You won’t believe how quick and easy it is to make!
And old Southern classic. Rich and fudgey, there is nothing like this pie!
The sunshine version of chess pie, Lemon Chess is one of my personal favorite pies of all time. Like most other chess pies, it uses simple ingredients that you probably already have on hand – and my mix-in-the-pan pie crust, too!
A homage to Shoney’s famous strawberry pie, this recipe will let you make your own version at home!
I can’t mention pies without sharing the recipe my great grandmother, Lela, was known for. The secret to the intense flavor is in the type of peaches you use!
Freezer apple pie recipe not showing up on your website I’d really like to have it.Can you correct?
Hey! I fixed the link. Thanks for letting me know!
My fav is your Buttermilk Peach. Second up is the Orange Meringue…give it a try in chocolate crust. Your Meringue recipe is the only one I use. All of your pies are wonderful.
No mine didn’t make the list. Lemon meringue.
That is one of my favorites as well Cheryl!!
My favorite Lemon Meringue pie is the recipe from scratch without condensed milk. My sweet Mama use to make them but only for special occasions She also made the best coconut pie. They were all eaten that day. Oh how I miss her!
Is it really worth purchasing the cast iron pie plate? I have looked at them in the lodge store but wasn’t sure how they baked?
I like how evenly they bake and I love the crust when cooked in a well seasoned one. However, I don’t think the difference warrants buying a new pie plate unless you are hankering for a cast iron one. 🙂
The fried “Peach” pies sound absolutely magnificent! My great-gran used to make something that sounds an awful lot like this… definitely one for me to try!
I hope you get the chance to try one soon!!!
You know good and well you’re always talking math when measuring amounts for your delicious recipes. LOL
🙂 Now Rick, math used in cooking is what I would consider the Good Lord’s math. When you start adding in strings of numbers and tossing in parts of the alphabet, you go straight to the devil’s math 🙂 Hope you’re having a good week so far!
Do you think the chocolate pie is like the one they serve at Golden Corral? It is so good but they only have it at certain times of the year.
I’ve never had it. Does it have a meringue on top or is it more fudgey and bald like this one ? I’m sure I have a recipe that is close, if not it.
The Golden Corral Chocolate Chess pie has Cool Whip on the top! It is the best I have ever eaten. Our Golden Corral has Chocolate Chess every time we go. Christy I know your has to be delicious!
I hope you get the chance to try mine Linda, would love to hear what you think!!
