Apple Brown Betty (Guest Post!)

I’m about to fly into Birmingham, AL for a booksigning tonight. After the booksigning I’m driving on home to good old Huntsville again. There really is no place like home, you know! In the meantime, my friend Jyl is bringing you a post today. Jyl cooks good old mountain woman food and I’d gladly sit down at her table anyday and eat whatever struck her fancy to serve up (you can find her blog here).
Just so ya know, Jyl is pretty much a saint at this point in our friendship. I have said on more than one occasion lately that it doesn’t pay to be in my inner circle of friends at this point in the game because with all that I have going on, chances are if you stay near me for more than a few minutes I’m gonna see if you can’t help out with the workload (By the way, thank you to everyone who has been helping me by answering questions and comments here and on the Facebook Page!). Sainted Jyl has chosen, despite the work and effort involved at this point in my life, to be my friend and help me hold this crazy life of mine together. Between you and me, I think that makes her a wee bit on the crazy side but I sure do hope she doesn’t come to her senses anytime soon!

Here is her Apple Brown Betty. I plan on letting Katy rose make this for dessert tomorrow night. Thank you , Jyl!

Jyl says: Apple Brown Betty is a staple recipe around here that is so stinkin’ easy to make. It’s quick, affordable and feeds a crowd too! Although the pictures don’t depict it…it is best served with some vanilla ice cream. Here, let me show you just how easy it is to make:

applesauce

Add a quart jar of applesauce to a 8X10 or a 9X13 baking dish. Either will work great.

sugar

Add 1/4 cup of sugar to the applesauce.

mix

Just mix it up in your baking dish. No need to dirty more dishes than ya have to!

graham cracker crumbs

Chop up your graham crackers into crumbs

cinnamon

Mix in 1 or 2 teaspoons of cinnamon (depends on your taste) and stir it in good with a fork.

butter

Melt a stick of butter and add it to your graham cracker crumbs and cinnamon. Mix well

cover

Cover the applesauce completely with your crumb mixture.

pecans

Sprinkle pecans all over the top…if you like pecans. If you don’t, just leave them out.

You then bake it at 400 degrees for about 10-15 minutes.

It really is that easy!

Last but certainly not least…ENJOY!

witty if you must,

but be gracious if it KILLS you!”
