Apple Brown Betty (Guest Post!)
I’m about to fly into Birmingham, AL for a booksigning tonight. After the booksigning I’m driving on home to good old Huntsville again. There really is no place like home, you know! In the meantime, my friend Jyl is bringing you a post today. Jyl cooks good old mountain woman food and I’d gladly sit down at her table anyday and eat whatever struck her fancy to serve up (you can find her blog here).
Just so ya know, Jyl is pretty much a saint at this point in our friendship. I have said on more than one occasion lately that it doesn’t pay to be in my inner circle of friends at this point in the game because with all that I have going on, chances are if you stay near me for more than a few minutes I’m gonna see if you can’t help out with the workload (By the way, thank you to everyone who has been helping me by answering questions and comments here and on the Facebook Page!). Sainted Jyl has chosen, despite the work and effort involved at this point in my life, to be my friend and help me hold this crazy life of mine together. Between you and me, I think that makes her a wee bit on the crazy side but I sure do hope she doesn’t come to her senses anytime soon!
Here is her Apple Brown Betty. I plan on letting Katy rose make this for dessert tomorrow night. Thank you , Jyl!
Jyl says: Apple Brown Betty is a staple recipe around here that is so stinkin’ easy to make. It’s quick, affordable and feeds a crowd too! Although the pictures don’t depict it…it is best served with some vanilla ice cream. Here, let me show you just how easy it is to make:
Add a quart jar of applesauce to a 8X10 or a 9X13 baking dish. Either will work great.
Add 1/4 cup of sugar to the applesauce.
Just mix it up in your baking dish. No need to dirty more dishes than ya have to!
Chop up your graham crackers into crumbs
Mix in 1 or 2 teaspoons of cinnamon (depends on your taste) and stir it in good with a fork.
Melt a stick of butter and add it to your graham cracker crumbs and cinnamon. Mix well
Cover the applesauce completely with your crumb mixture.
Sprinkle pecans all over the top…if you like pecans. If you don’t, just leave them out.
You then bake it at 400 degrees for about 10-15 minutes.
It really is that easy!

Last but certainly not least…ENJOY!

witty if you must,
but be gracious if it KILLS you!”

I’ve got applesauce…I’ve got graham crackers…I’ve got all the other ingredients…I’ve GOT to try this, Jyl! Thanks so much for sharing this and for helping Christy keep her sanity!
I’m not a big fan of apples, but do love eating applesauce every so often. I’ve never thought to Incorporate It Into any recipes. (Just never dawned on me I reckon. lol) I’ve never, ever had apple brown betty. No one In the family has ever made It that I can recall. Well, that’s gonna change soon! I definitely plan on giving this recipe a try and triumphly proclaim the “I made It first!” award! hehe
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful recipe Jyl! I can’t wait to try It! =)
Hi Jyl ~waves to you~
Thank you for “guest posting” today and for the yummy looking recipe. Between the apple flavor and cinnamon flavor, betcha my man will looove this one! Also, thanks for letting me use your camera at the booksigning ~hand u the “LifeSaver award”~ You rock!
Hey Terri. You are so welcome in regards to the camera, glad I had it with me.
When I was in school, looong time ago, we had this, but it was layered in the pan with whole graham crackers, about three layers. The butter was then brushed on the top of the crackers to make them super yummy. My grown kids still love this dessert and ask me to make it for them. I have also done this with apples instead and crushed crackers on top, so yes, those Cracker Barrel apples will work perfectly.
Mmmm, that sounds so good. I am going to have to try it your way too,
I remember this from elementary school mid-1950’s exactly the way you describe. No pecans. Haven’t had it since.
In the instructions for this recipe, you tell us to add 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, but in the recipe printed underneath, it lists only 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Would you please clarify which is correct? Thanks.
You can add either 1 or 2. It just depends on your taste.
Jyl, This looks great! Thank you for posting it. Also.. thank you for all the work you do for Christy. I know you bust your tail for her. I happen to think you are pretty awesome. Thanks to Edith Ann I have to say “And dats da truthhhhh…”
I think your pretty awesome too Bill.
Thanks Jyl… I shared this with my friends on facebook.
