Aunt Ruthie’s No Sew Bunting Banner
Hey friends! I am tickled to death to bring you a post from my dear friend and a lady I have been a fan of for years, Aunt Ruthie of Sugar Pie Farmhouse. Hers is one of my absolute favorite blogs and I just love everything she does from start to finish! A few months back I asked if she would consider being a regular decorating contributor to SouthernPlate and when she said YES I just about heard a hallelujah chorus in my heart! I know you’ll love her as much as I do so without further adieu, here’s Aunt Ruthie! Hey! Aunt Ruthie here! I’m excited to share with you a few decorating ideas and a super easy, no-sew bunting banner to add a festive touch to any room. I have a little play-nook that I’ve decorated for my grandkids when they come over. By the middle of August I’ll have a grand total of four boys and four girls! YAY!! So, a kids play area is very much needed! Since this playroom is right off the family room I wanted to make the two blend together so I chose a neutral color palette. The gray stripe canvas toy boxes, from Target, are perfect to keep the play area looking tidy. I also found this cute TeePee on Amazon that the grand-littles love! The curtains are just king size flat bed sheets. I tied a knot at each end for a whimsical look.
But up above is what I think gives this playroom a magical, storybook feel. I strung glowing cafe lights and a creamy white bunting across the top of the room. You can find the cafe lights at Target, Walmart or Amazon. But the bunting is something you can make in 15 minutes at home! I’m going to show you how here:
I started with a twelve inch strip of inexpensive muslin that was 4 yards long. I ironed it with spray starch to make it a little stiff, then I folded it in half to cut it into my bunting.
You’ll need to cut a template…the triangle shape that will be your pattern. I just used some leftover scrapbooking paper. Use a ruler to make sure the sides measure the same. Turn it over and use some Scotch Tape to make a sticky-back loop to help keep the template in place on the fabric while cutting.
Place the template next to the fold and cut on both sides. But do not cut all the way up to the top, that excess is going to be the “string” that holds it all together. For each triangle cut-out you will be alternating the triangle template from right-side-up to upsidedown.
This is what it should look like as you begin to cut the triangles out.
And here is another view to show that you need to leave about 1 1/2 inches at the top.
When you get to the end you need to leave about 12 inches in order to have a string so you can tie the bunting from one end to the other when you go to hang it.
If you need a longer string to tie with, you can just tie on an additional strip of fabric on the end to lengthen it.
And there ya go! Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Of course you can use any cotton fabric in so many beautiful colors and patterns! So fun!!
This is such a fun way to add some happy whimsy to any room! I often use this same bunting banner across my fireplace mantle. It’s certainly perfect for parties too! I hope you give it a try!
Keep home cozy & sweet!
