The sweet homemade barbecue sauce for this BBQ chicken breast in oven recipe is AH-mazing y’all. Made with the finger-lickin’ combination of honey, brown sugar, ketchup, soy sauce, and garlic powder, it makes the most sensational sticky chicken dish.

Spooning bbq sauce over chicken breast in dish.

Now, I’ve shared a sticky chicken recipe before on Southern Plate. However, the original recipe requires bone-in, skin-on chicken breast. The skin was key for all that wonderful sticky sauce to have something to stick to.

I’ve since modified the recipe with a little trick (which will be revealed below) that makes it work with boneless skinless chicken breasts because we all know they are everyone’s favorite. They are easier (and often cheaper) to find these days. I personally always have boneless, skinless chicken breast in my freezer.

This bbq chicken breast in oven recipe includes a sweet homemade bbq sauce that’s going to blow you away! It includes an enticing combination of honey, brown sugar, soy sauce, garlic powder, and ketchup. The oven-baked chicken breast comes out nice and moist and irresistibly saucy.

We like to serve our baked chicken breast (which we call sticky chicken) with yellow rice and spoon extra sauce on top for the rice to soak in. I can’t wait for you to taste this sauce! It’s like no other.

BBQ chicken breast in oven ingredients

Recipe Ingredients

  • Boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • Honey
  • Brown sugar
  • Ketchup
  • Soy sauce
  • Garlic powder
  • All-purpose flour (self-rising flour will do just fine if that is what you have).

Making sticky chicken sauce

To make the best barbecue sauce ever, simply place all of the ingredients in a 2-cup measuring cup and stir well. Place this in the microwave or a small saucepot.

If using the microwave: Heat for one minute and stir. Repeat in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until smooth and well blended.

If using a saucepot: Heat over medium heat, stirring often, until it becomes hot enough to blend together well with no lumps.

Cover the bottom of baking dish with BBQ sauce.

Pour just a bit of this wonderful sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish. Spread to coat the bottom of the dish.

Coat chicken breast in flour.

Place flour in a shallow bowl and just press each side of each chicken breast into that so that it is lightly coated.

Place coated chicken breast in the baking dish.

Place these in your baking dish.

Spoon the remaining barbecue sauce over the top of the chicken breasts.

Place uncovered in a 350-degree oven.

After 30 minutes, remove from the oven and carefully flip chicken pieces over. Spoon sauce from the baking dish over them again and return to the oven for another 15-30 minutes or until chicken is fully cooked.

Baste it once more during this time.

What do you serve with BBQ chicken breast?

The world is your oyster when it comes to sides to accompany this main dish. I’ve mentioned yellow rice and mashed potato but you might prefer cauliflower rice or cheesy garlic mashed potatoes. Another option is mac and cheese, like our favorite oven-baked version or cauliflower mac and cheese. What about roasted vegetables or a potato salad? The options are truly endless!

I made this over the weekend and it was by far one of the best chicken dishes I have ever had. So easy, the chicken was moist and the sauce was over the top! I will be making this for our Fourth of July meal. We had potato salad and corn on the cob with it on Sunday. I treated it like BBQ chicken! So yummy!
I enjoy your emails so much. Thanks for sharing all of these great recipes! They are a joy to read (lots of funny mixed in!), as is your entire post each time!

  2. This was crazy good! My bbq snobby 20 year son said this was perfect rainy day bbq chicken. Sauce is delicious and chicken stays nice and moist. This will become a staple!

  3. Tried this last night. Delicious! I’m diabetic so I shouldn’t have had any. The men loved it. Next time I’m going to add sweet bell peppers and onions to the sauce. Served with white rice. Thanks!

    1. This menu looked so delish I decided to make it for dinner last night. Everything was done except for the chicken in the oven when do to a freak occurrence our oven decided to go into ERR mode. I decided to finish it in the pressure cooker. I am sure it would have been better finishing it the way the recipe intended but it was absolutely divine. Thanks for sharing this menu. The only thing I did different was to add a skillet of yellow squash!!

  4. I made this boneless breast sticky chicken last night. Everyone just love it. My daughter who can be funny about chicken ate the most. Thank you for your wonderful recipes. When they ask where the recipe came from I just have to say Christy and they know who I am talking about. I use a lot of your recipes. Thank you for all of your hard work.

  5. Christy, is there ever a replacement for Ketchup in any recipe? My doctor has taken me off Nightshade plants and it’s killing me! No tomatoes, no peppers (bell, paprika, cayenne and PIMENTO!) No squash, okra, eggplant, or SOY sauce because in the USA, soy is cut with petunia which is a nightshade plant. Though, I have to say I am feeling much better since cutting these out of my diet, rats! (Spaghetti !!!) I hope you can give me some direction here. We so love your recipes even though I have to *edit* them. Thank you and God Bless!

    1. Oh my goodness! I’m glad you were able to figure out the source of the issue and that it is so much better now! I’ve not heard of a replacement but I will sure ask around and let you know if I come up with anything. Thank you for sticking with me!
