What is imitation crab?
Imitation crab is usually made from white fish. It’s usually made from something called surimi, or white fish flesh. It has the bones removed and minced into a paste. Then it’s combined together with other ingredients including both natural and artificial flavors, starch, sugar, and sodium.

Notes
Thank you! Can’t wait to try this one. You answered the question that I had about using canned crab meat.
Thank you for the suggestion on what to substitute for the cream cheese. I was wondering as I read the article then I saw your comment! Thanks a bunch!
I would like to try this dip although I’m not sure how imitation crab meat tastes. My husband loves seafood so I will try this. Thanks for sharing!
I love seafood more than steak! I’ve always turned away from anything with imitation crab meat. But honey, I have changed my mind. Old Bay Seasoning made the entire difference. As I was reading this post about seafood, my head automatically says “Old Bay Seasoning” and I’m waiting for it to be listed. I’m looking at the ingredients listed versus the picture of all the ingredients in the bowl and one is in the picture and not in the ingredients. I told myself, “that’s Old Bay Seasoning!” Sure enough it was.
Don’t tell your honey it’s made from imitation crab meat. Get a true opinion. I can’t wait to try it out on my boys!
OH MY GOODNESS! This sounds absolutely scrumptious! I think my favorite part is that it is made (or can be made) with imitation crab meat. That makes it SO much less expensive than using “real” crab. Plus there is the added bonus of not finding little shards of crab shell in there too!
My husband loves crab meat salad so i think this would be something he would also like. It sounds delicious!
This sounds wonderful and we love imitation crab meat. I have a question: can you substitute the cocktail sauce for something else, like salsa or tomato purée? Both my husband and I aren’t a fan of cocktail sauce but the recipe sounds so delicious. What do you think?
Definitely, try it out and report back!
I would actually do this with mayo instead due to lactose intolerence. Thanks for the subs suggestion!
