Cold Outside? Treat yourself with these recipes!
They’re saying it’s gonna snow again but here in Alabama we get twenty snow warnings to every snowflake that drops so I’ll hold off on expectations of a winter wonderland. After all, we already had one miracle in the past thirty days. Whether we get snow or not the temperature is still dropping so I thought I’d share some great old fashioned recipes to help keep you warm over the next few days while I finish up some new recipes posts to bring you. Gratefully, Christy
Old Fashioned Stovetop Hot Chocolate
I’ll never forget the first time I had homemade, real, hot chocolate, made on the stove and not with a mix. Although we made our ownmix from scratch (and it was delicious) there was just something about that extra chocolaty decadence of classic hot chocolate, with that little extra bit of cocoa lingering for the last sip that had me hooked. Homemade Cinnabuns – The Easy Way!
These cinnamon rolls have power behind them – real power. You could pretty much get anything you wanted if you showed up toting a plate of these babies, warm with icing oozing down the side.
Our Family’s Chicken Stew Recipe
Please make this chicken stew.
Its that good. Its so good that it actually bothers me to think that some of you might only look at the photos, read the tutorial, and never make it. Its so good that if I could, I would seriously arrange a time and place for all of us to meet up under a tent somewhere in the middle of the country just to serve you this chicken stew. Its just……..its…..well folks, its just so good!
Mama’s Hoe Cake
I can honestly say that this is a rare recipe, having searched and not found it anywhere online. I do hope you will try it and guarantee that if you like biscuits, you’ll LOVE hoe cake.
This is especially good with Crock Pot Apple Butter!
Also, Amazon.com is now selling the Southern Plate cookbook for a little over $15.00 so pick up your copy now at this great price!
Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth,
for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire:
it is the time for home.

Hi Miss Christy! I love your recipes and cinnabuns are my favorite!! I just can’t hardly wait to make em! Do you think they’d be good if I tried to turn em into french toast cinnabuns? 🙂
I think that would do just fine. Let me know how they turn out!
Hey Christy! Don’t fergit the Chicken n’ dumplin’s! Thanks for sharing (reminding) us of the hot, delicious comfort foods that make winter seem a little less harsh during those big storms. We are supposed to have an ice storm tomorrow…..I’m ready and the kitchen has been hoppin’ here just in case the power goes out and I need to use my Camping stove. Sending hugs your way, hoping ‘Bama doesn’t get toooo much of that wintry blast. xoxoxoxo
Today I made your peanut butter cookies…Again. They have become the favorite cookie here at our house. Thanks for giving it to us.
I am so tickled to hear that yall are enjoying the recipe! Eat one for me.
Thanks for ‘re-putting’ these recipes up, Christy! If we get the snow they are predicting, these will certainly help keep us warm! Just hope we don’t lose power!! Just got done looking at the post for Hot Chocolate and can’t get over how much Katy Rose and Brady have grown in just a little over a year!!
I love your cookbook! The recipes are great, but my favorite part are the stories! I made the watergate salad and I remembered my grandma’s house! Food helps us solidify our memories, I think! Thank you for a wonderful book!!!!!!!!
I agree Kelly, it does help solidify our memories. Food is such a huge part of tradition and heritage!
Made your chicken stew earlier this week. My whole family LOVES it…and that’s quite an accomplishment!
So glad to hear that it was a hit with everyone. I know what you mean about it being an accomplishment, I have one who is a picky eater.
Sounds delicious! Just really a big biscuit that you don’t have to roll out. I just love your recipes Christy. Question, why don’t you like to cook with cast iron? I have several of my grandmothers cooking vessels and I love to cook in them.
I did this post a long time ago and have since acquired a cast iron skillet that I enjoy cooking in. It is very old and cooks so much better than the new fangled cast iron you buy today. Before that, I had only owned new cast iron and I don’t care if it is supposed to be pre seasoned or not, new cast iron is nothing like the good old heirloom stuff! 🙂
AMEN!!!! I had a brand new “cast iron” skillet that rusted before i used it! I’ll take my black iron skillet any day. (That’s what hubby calls it! I call it heavy as frozen poo. LOL)
LOL!!!
