In this video I’ll show you how to use a dehydrator to preserve frozen mixed vegetables for long period of time without taking up precious freezer space! At the end of the video, I also show you what the dehydrated vegetables look like once you reconstitute them and how easy that is to do!

I typed up the captioning for this video myself in order to make it closed captioned so be sure and click the little button in the bottom right if you’d like to “read” the video. For the record, in a ten minute time span, I spoke over 1879 words 🙂

Here is a link to my dehydrator since many of you have asked.

My family has really cut out tv a lot lately, almost down to nothing at all. In it’s place, we find interesting channels to subscribe to on Youtube! There is a lot of great educational and enriching material out there (not to mention cute cat videos), and it’s free! Be sure to subscribe to my Youtube channel by clicking here.  If you have young ones, check out my story time videos!

  1. Hi Christy! I am going to treat myself to a dehydrator. Can you dehydrate canned vegetables?
    Blessings to you and yours!

  2. Instead of using canning jars for storing the dehydrated veggies could you not use zip lock baggies instead? This would take up even less space. Also, have you tried using frozen fruit instead of frozen veggies? I would think frozen fruit would be able to dehydrate the same as veggies. Really enjoy your website, books, etc. Thanks for the post. Have a good one and keep those great ideas coming our way. God’s blessings to you and yours.

    1. Frozen fruit works great as well. I’ve even dehydrated canned fruit-we love doing that to mandarin oranges! I do have special sheets I put it on to dehydrate.
You can certainly use bags but I’d suggest freezer grade for more protection.
Thanks for your sweet words! So glad you’re here!!

  3. Gaaaah! Dehydrating frozen vegetables! Brilliant! Never even entertained the thought of doing that. Now I have to drag out the old round dehydrator and get to work. This is going to be fun. Great idea…you rock!

  4. Well, Christy, I watched your video this morning and went and bought the dehydrator, it should be here by the 11th-15th…can’t wait. I had a very small round one but it took so long and didn’t do enough so got rid of it. I love your recipes and have made a lot of them, thanks for sharing your Southern cooking, I’m pretty much a Southerner.

  5. Hey Christy,

Just love all your ideas. You cook the food I like to eat. I have your new cookbook, and I can’t wait for the next one. I use both of your cookbooks at least 3 or 4 times a week. In your next cookbook, I hope you include and share some of these new food “cost savings” ideas. I too dehydrate and cook meals ahead and freeze. Looking for new recipes, shortcuts, etc. to prepare meals with dehydrated foods, as well as buying tips. Thanks for all your helpful advice.

    1. And, I wanted to add . . .

Shelf stable products like powdered milk, sour cream, buttermilk, etc.
Do you use them? And how? I would really like info on powdered sour cream. It is not an item I keep on hand. When I need it, it seems like that is the time it costs the most at the grocery store. So I was looking at the powdered sour cream as a way to have it on hand all the time. I’m just not sure of how it would work in recipes.

  6. LOVE your blog and books, first time to comment. This dehydrator video is such an eye-opener!!! My freezer, like yours, is always FULL, and I welcome the chance to have fruits and vegetables in jars on the shelf. Many, many thanks!!! Best idea EVER!
