Dr. Seuss Wocket In My Pocket Cupcakes! *Wocket Cupcake Printable*

This is National Read Across America Week! For those of you with elementary and preschool, this week will be filled with several Dr. Seuss readings and activities as Read Across America Week always coincides with Dr. Seuss’ birthday. My son’s school has a big to do all week long, even hosting a green eggs and ham breakfast for families one morning! Special speakers come in and contests and activities run throughout the week as well.

Room mothers are usually asked to provide some sort of “Seuss Themed” snack to make this week even more special for the kids. I thought I’d bring you what I did this year for my son’s third grade class and also offer you the printable page I created with all of the wockets on it so all you have to do is print and go!

If you aren’t a baker, simply print out the wockets, preparing them as instructed below, and purchase your class’s cupcakes from a local bakery, then stick your wockets in and you’ve got a seusserific snack with virtually no fuss! These also go great in breakfast muffins. Some schools don’t allow baked goods, so making your own wockets and purchasing cupcakes would be another way around this. Thank goodness my wonderful town hasn’t gone that route and I can still bring baked items to school!

I love to bake cupcakes in ice cream cones and kids really enjoy them as well. Doing this added the perfect touch of Seussical whimsy to this treat.

Whenever I need to make special cupcakes, rather than go and look for themed cupcake inserts (commonly called “picks”) to go in them, I like to design my own and use this method. It allows for far more creativity, is less expensive, and really lets you personalize your cupcakes to the occasion. I’ve designed several different picks for my kids birthdays which included curling ribbons, cartoon characters, and even photographs of my kids themselves! I’m going to do a complete tutorial on ice cream cone cupcakes next week so this one is just going to be a bit more brief, mostly serving as an idea for those of us who have to make these Seuss- snacks this week!

I used a boxed cake mix for this. Simply place your ice cream cones in a muffin tin like this.

Fill each cone about 2/3 full.

Be careful of the ones with chips in the top because the batter will spill over these while they are baking. I try not to use any with chips in them but sometimes have to when I don’t think to buy extra. Those with chips around the top, I just save for ice cream later by putting them in a zipper bag.

This is how full I make mine. You might want to do a little less until you see how much it will rise. I always make two or three extras in case I have any that cook over the cone.

You can use cardstock if you like but I just used plain old paper.

To make our Wockets, we need to print out a few sheets of them and cut them out. We’ll also need clear contact paper and either Popsicle sticks, coffee stirrers, or drinking straws that have been cut in half.

Just use what you have on hand. You can even use toothpicks if you have them.

I try not to ever go out and buy something when I can make do instead.

Once you have all of your wockets cut out, place them face down on clear contact paper and fold it over, pressing and smoothing to remove any air bubbles.

You have just laminated something the cheapest way possible :).

Cut out the Wocket, leaving a bit of an edge. This is so the oils in the icing don’t get up to the paper you printed your Wocket on and discolor it. We want it nice and sealed up in there.

Attach your Wocket to a stick, coffee stirrer, half of a drinking straw, whatever cranks your tractor.

I glued mine but you can tape it, staple it, glue it…I’m starting to feel like Bubba Gump here..

Stick it in your iced cupcake! I died my cake batter green for these and my icing bright orange. Remember, if you don’t have time or simply don’t want to bake cupcakes, just call your local grocery store and have the bakery make you some and then put these Wockets in them!

WOCKETS!!

Now here is the fun part!

When the kids are done with their cupcakes, have them take the stick

off the back of their Wocket and put him in their Pocket.
