Snowman Soup With Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix
If you’re looking for a fun and festive treat for kids these holidays, you can’t look past this Snowman Soup recipe. It takes my homemade hot chocolate mix to a new delectable level.
As a child, we used to mix up a batch of Snowman Soup kits at the start of each winter and it would last the entire season. In fact, this is a recipe from my first-grade teacher, Mrs. Menotti. We made it as a class when I was six years old and everyone got to bring a sampling of mix and the recipe home. I was so thrilled when Mama then went out and got the ingredients for us to make, too!
Nowadays, I’m letting my kids make their own Snowman Soup kits with the same quick and easy homemade hot cocoa mix. Then they package it into little kits to give as “Snowman Soup”. This is such a great gift idea for classmates, friends, family, or anyone else your children would like to offer a special thank you to!
My homemade hot chocolate mix recipe is made with just 4 ingredients: instant milk powder, powdered coffee creamer, Nesquik instant chocolate milk powder, and powdered sugar. All the kids need to do is mix those ingredients together and then package it in a gift bag with the Soup necessities. This includes mini marshmallows, chocolate kisses, and a small candy cane for stirring. To make a cup of hot cocoa, your recipients just combine the ingredients with hot water.
Let me tell you, this is the creamiest, milkiest, chocolatiest hot chocolate you’ll ever taste. And the Snowman additions make it even better! I hope you and your family enjoy making Snowman hot chocolate these holidays.

How to Make Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix
Now we’re just going to pour all ingredients into a large bowl!
This beautiful young lady pours in the powdered milk…
Adding in the powdered coffee creamer…
Then the Nesquik and confectioners sugar.
Mix it all up!
When you are done it will look like this!
This one batch made over 45 servings.
Snowman Soup
Now, to make your Snowman Soup, I measured out a heaping 1/3 cup of mix into a sandwich zipper seal bag.
I then folded the bag over, tape it, and place it in a larger clear gift bag.
In that bag, I place 10 mini marshmallows, two chocolate kisses, and a small candy cane.
Marshmallows for snowballs, Hershey kisses for the eyes, and a small candy cane as a stir stick.
I finish with a ribbon around the bag to seal it, a tag with instructions, and a copy of the below poem.
Voila! Snowman soup is ready to gift these holidays.
The instructions are as simple as filling a coffee cup about 1/3 full with the mix, adding hot water, and stirring.
Now, there are several poems available online but this is my favorite and printer-ready tags (with the poem) are available here.
Storage
When stored in an airtight container in a cool dry place like your kitchen pantry, this hot chocolate mix will last indefinitely (up to at least 12 months), as all of the ingredients have long shelf lives.
Recipe Notes
- This Snowman Soup idea works just as well with store-bought hot cocoa mix.
- If you don’t have confectioner’s sugar, granulated sugar works in a pinch.
- Feel free to substitute the kisses for a different type of chocolate. However, for less mess, it’s best if they’re wrapped.
- You can also use a bigger candy cane in any flavor.

Oh.My.Goodness! is this hot chocolate goooood! I mixed up a batch and handed it out to the women at my church – they loved it. We plan on using it on Thanksgiving morning when we have a Fun Run at our church to benefit the local soup kitchens & shelters. We were looking for an absolutely delicious hot cocoa to serve with coffee after the run, and I think this is it. I found chocolate creme flavored powdered coffee mate and used that. Thank you so much for posting this recipe!
I am so glad you like it Sharon!!! I hope the event goes well!!
Christy, this mix recipe brings back memories of early grade school for me, you know, when dinosaurs roamed the earth. 🙂 My friends and I felt so grown up giving little jars of this as gifts. You’ve inspired me to think about making nostalgia themed gift boxes for Christmas this year. A container of this cocoa mix with some mix-ins on the side, a container of Russian Tea mix. Not sure what else but I’m sure I’ll see something on your blog or in your book Sweetness that will beg to be included. 🙂 Again, thanks Christy!
Love this recipe and can’t wait to let the grandkids help me make it. Thank you for sharing this recipe.
I hope y’all have a wonderful time and make lots of memories!!!
Will make this with my Pathfinders { scouts }
and deliver them to the community as a
community project…..attach a Bible Verse to them
Blessings
Nevermind… I bought the stuff and made it… just didn’t realize it would take up so little room in the sandwich bag.. I did just as you said, folded it over, taped it, then added the rest 😀 Thank you for the great recipe!!
I’m kind of confused! The directions say,” I measured out a heaping 1/3 cup of mix into a sandwich zipper seal bag.
I then folded the bag over and taped it and added ten marshmallows, two kisses, and a small candy cane.”
What did you add the marshmallows, kisses and candy cane to? A separate packet? Drop them loosely in the treat bag? I know it’s late and I’m tired, but I cannot figure out how you added the items to a bag you had folded over and taped.
I just bought the stuff to make this but I add Peppermint Mocha Coffeemate, mini chocolate chips, and crushed peppermint to my mix. Put it in jars and give it as gifts. Thanks for posting. I means I don’t have to go hunting for your recipe!!
