Baked Italian Turkey Subs

My baked Italian turkey subs recipe is a total crowd pleaser. I mean, who can say no to a baked crusty bread sandwich overloaded with sharp cheddar cheese, mayo, smoked turkey, onion, and turkey pepperoni. The answer? Not me!

Hot and Cheesy Italian Turkey Subs

I love a good hearty supper with tons of flavor that doesn’t require a lot of work, especially at the end of a hot summer’s day! So today I’m showing you how to make this deliciously ooey gooey extra cheesy baked Italian turkey sub sandwich, perfect on its own or with a dipping side of pizza sauce.

The original inspiration for this hot and cheesy Italian turkey subs recipe came from my buddy, Stacey Little, over at Southern Bite. Years ago he shared his mama’s recipe for top to bottom turkey and cheese bread and it’s been a favorite ever since.

Luckily, these Italian turkey subs are so quick and easy to make. All you need to do is combine the sharp cheddar cheese and mayo and spread that on some crusty French bread. Then we add layers of smoked turkey slices, turkey pepperoni, and onion. Now, all it needs is to be wrapped in foil and baked in the oven until it’s nice and toasted. 6 ingredients, 30 minutes, and dinner is served. Music to my ears!

Now, I don’t know about you, but we will be enjoying this quick summer supper with a big old glass of iced sweet tea, also made in a jiff! It’s the Southern way, after all.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Crusty french bread
  • Thinly sliced onion
  • Smoked turkey (from the deli)
  • Mayo
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Pepperoni
  • Pizza sauce for dipping, if you like (totally optional).

How to Make Italian Turkey Subs

Mix together mayo and cheese, then layer all ingredients on the bread.

Mix together mayo and cheese in a medium bowl until well combined.

On the other side, layer sliced turkey, pepperoni, and onion.

Wrap sandwich in aluminum foil and bake at 350 for about 15 to 20 minutes or until toasty and heated through. That’s it!

I hope you get to make my hot turkey sandwich recipe soon. It’s a definite crowd pleaser and with very little effort you have an extremely satisfying meal. One sandwich usually serves about two to three people.

Storage

Because we’re baking the bread, this is one of those recipes you should serve immediately.

Recipe Notes

  • After the sandwich has finished baking, you can add other fresh vegetables to the hoagie, like tomato slices, shredded lettuce, chopped bell pepper, olives, dill pickles, and avocado.
  • For added flavor, add a spread of your favorite mustard (whether that’s yellow mustard or Dijon mustard) to the baguette before adding the cheese mixture.
  • Other delicious types of cheese you can use on your turkey sub include provolone cheese, mozzarella cheese, Swiss cheese, and Monterey Jack cheese.
  • If the pepperoni has too much heat for you and your family, you can use cooked turkey bacon strips instead.
  • To make individual baked turkey subs, use hot dog buns instead.
  • To enhance the Italian flavor, go ahead and sprinkle the hoagie with 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning or dried basil before baking.
  • This is a great recipe to make with Thanksgiving leftovers if you have leftover turkey in the fridge.
