Hot Buttered Sweet Rice

Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?

When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…

And put a bowl in front of her.

Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…

And add a pat of butter.

And a sprinkling of sugar.

And give it a good stir.

And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.

Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.

It sure was good.

Did you eat this when you were little?

Was there some other comfort food that you remember along these lines? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below!

  1. I grew up eating sweet rice and my 84 year old self still enjoys it. I always add a bit of cinnamon to it.

  2. My grandmother made this just about every time we had a dish that called for rice. I make it now and my family shuns it. Oh well, more for me! I am dying to try your rice pudding recipe, but my cancer makes me to tired to cook much. Boy do I miss all of my recipes that I’ve gathered from here and there. I gotta get stronger and get back in the kitchen.

  3. We would have this for supper often. Mom made it with milk, then we added butter, sugar and cinnamon. My husband likes it for breakfast. Good anytime!

  4. I grew up eating this dish as well, my family called it “Breakfast Rice”. We added butter, sugar and a splash of milk. I still love it, decades later!

  5. Hey Christy!
Growing up in Eastern NC in the middle of farming country, folks would have a really hearty breakfast before going out to work in the fields all day, since lunch was usually just a quick break to gulp down a pack of nabs and a Pepsi Cola or a pack of peanuts that have been poured into a “Baby Coke” bottle.
One of the staples for this breakfast meal was almost always grits or rice. Grandma would always make red eye gravy to serve with her grits or rice, but our Mama did something a little special and different for our family. We kids always delighted in the days when Mama would make “Rice and Cheese” for us. This was simply cooked riced with the addition of some freshly grated hoop cheese or cheddar mixed in. Sometimes she’d add a little milk for a creamier consistency, but boy oh boy was it SO GOOD!!
