Hot Buttered Sweet Rice
Who all has had a bowl of Hot Buttered Sweet Rice handed to them by their loving mama or grandmama?
When my Mama was a little girl, she’d come in from school to find her Granny waiting to hear all about her day.
Knowing that kids were hungry after a long day at school, she’d smile when Mama walked in and sit her down at the table…
And put a bowl in front of her.
Then she’d take some rice from the supper she was preparing and scoop some hot right into that bowl…
And add a pat of butter.
And a sprinkling of sugar.
And give it a good stir.
And Mama would eat that entire bowl of warm, sweet, buttery rice.
Sometimes, the very next day before school, Mama would wake up to find her Granny heating up leftover rice to repeat this for a warm and soothing breakfast before she headed off to school.
It sure was good.
I never had rice until I married, then only with gravy or tomatoes. Had my parents for dinner and was throwing the rice away. My Mom about croaked. Said she’d take it for breakfast the next morning. Called me at 7 am and asked what I did to it. I didn’t know what she was talking about. They tried to eat it as a cereal, such as this, but I had salted the water that I boiled the rice in. Do you not salt rice, grits while cooking as you can’t get enough salt on them afterwards? lol I never heard of sugared rice until that event. Our breakfasts consisted of biscuits/gravy, oatmeal, sugar over canned tomatoes, or the salt shaker in the garden and we were lucky to have cucumbers or bell peppers left.
My grandma made this for me every time we visited her. It was so good and I loved it. She made it just like your recipe calls, but sometimes she added a little milk over it.
My mother-in-law taught me how to make this only we add a bit of vanilla!!
Growing up that was the only way we ate rice. I did not know there was another way.
We’d eat this as kids when Mama cooked pork chops and red-eye gravy [something I’ve never acquired a taste for -]
I thought I was the only person who ever ate rice with butter and sugar when I was a kid!!! Sure takes me back! I haven’t even thought about it in years but I will have to try it the next time I cook rice!!!
Comfort food for us were “potato cakes.” Left over mash potatoes, flour, milk, egg…roll them out 1/4 inch thick, cut into circles using a juice glass, with a pat of butter on each and then into the oven.
Best leftover EVER.
